The construction of the present sanctuary began in the year 1694.The temple is of baroque style, with an extensive hall and lateral chapels which communicate between themselves. The front, flanked by graceful towers, is the work of Toribio Martínez de la Vega.
The first altarpiece, dating back to the end of the 17th century, carved in blue and white and of baroque style, was work of Antonio Dupar, destroyed in 1936 at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War.
The present altarpiece is work of Antonio Carrión Valverde, but only up to the columns. The remainder of the side room and the present altarpiece are work of the artist of Granada, Nicolas Padros López.
The final restoration of the Sanctuary was carried out by means of a contest in 1950, and was won by architects from Murcia, Eugenio Bañón Segura and Mr. Damián Garcia Palacios. The last exterior phase is work of the architect Mr. Fernando Garrido.
The sanctuary houses nuns who live and work there and can be seen going about their chores when you visit.
