Situated some 80km from Murcia, Puerto Lumbreras constitutes the boundary between the Region of Murcia and the Community of Andalucía. The Municipal Township of Puerto Lumbreras stretches over a surface area of 139km² and has a population of over 10,000 inhabitants.
Puerto Lumbreras is a Municipal Township, which although small, offers great contrasts. The flat lands of the El Esparragal area to the East and the typical Mediterranean forestry area to the West.
Due to its geographical position at what can be considered the cross roads between Almería, Murcia and Grananda, the biggest market in the area would traditionally take place, even now a days it’s one of the most popular markets around.
The base of the economy of Puerto Lumbreras is the primary sector, agriculture and livestock, which employs 55% of the active population. The main productions are of cereals, fruit and vegetables.
Industry occupies a secondary place and following the old tourist tradition of Puerto Lumbreras, an important hotel infrastructure has been developed, with a capacity of 250 rooms and a total of 400 places, as well as now famous restaurants which have been established for many years.
Some of the best “tapa” cuisine in the South East of Spain is found in Puerto Lumbreras. Especially in those road side bars and restaurants that don’t look like much form the outside, but are warm and welcoming and great for food inside.
