In 1888 this parish church is built to conmemorate the establishment of Santiago de La Ribera as a village.
It was built on top of an old hermitage dedicated to Santiago Apóstol. The construction was carried out before the wedding between the families Barnuevo and Sandoval.
The Friar José María Barnuevo Rodrigo was a cavalier from the "Santiago Military Order", hence babtising this recently established locality as Santiago de la Ribera.
