Molina de Segura is only a short distance from the city of Murcia and is sheltered by the Sierras of Lugar and Espada, it lies on the bank of the river which gives the
town its name and is partially surrounded by orchards and cultivated areas. The remains of ancient civilizations have been found near the river, although, as
in so many of the towns and villages of this area, it was the Romans that left the largest impression of the peoples that inhabited this province before the arrival of the Moors. The Romans built a castle here, on the ruins of which the present day church is situated.
Molino in Spanish means mill and in a document dating from the 11th Century
this place was named as Molina la Seca, after the numerous water mills along
the river banks.
The Moors were here for nearly seven hundred years, and it wasn´t until the 15thcentury that they were finally driven out. The famous El Cid along with King Alfonso VI were stationed here as it was a strategic position from which to command the recapturing of the town of Aledo and various others in the region.
After the Moors had been defeated, Molina la Seca was given to the Prince Manuel and subsequently to Juan Alfonso Farjado, the Marquis of Molina.
The neoclassic style church of Our Lady of the Assumption was inaugurated in 1765 and safely guarded in its interior is a relic of the patron saint of Molina,
Saint Vicente the Martyr. The church was declared a monument of historic and artistic importance in 1983.
In 1833 the small hermitage of Saint Roque was built where the processional sculptures created by Bartolomé Gil are kept.
In 1916 the name of the town was changed from Molina la Seca to Molina de Segura and this came about because during the War of Succession, Austrian troops took control of the town and burnt the archives. The new name does conjure up a more favourable vision which is more fitting for an area famous for its agricultural produce as well as embroidery, leather, ceramics and ironwork and the old tradition of basket making from the tough grass found by the river.
