The territory of this municipality is found at some eleven kilometres from the city of Cartagena and at three from La Union, having its present limits established by the municipality of Lentiscar to the North, the municipality of La Union to the South, the delegation of San Félix to the West and that of El Beal and the Mar Menor to the East.
The area of El Algar was a crossing point for many different tracks and roads used by cattle herders on their way to the mountain ranges to water their cattle at the most important water well in the area that existed there many years ago. El Algar thus raised its population over the years as more and more settlers came, attracted by the constant movement of cattle raisers, farmers, merchants and other travellers.
Still it continues being a crossing of important routes and includes much heritage from La Mancha (central area of Spain), due to the repopulation which took place mainly from the aforementioned area.
The denomination of the area, El Algar, is of Arabian origin and its meaning is, cave or hollow. Recent studies referred to the countryside of Cartagena in the Moslem epoch, they show that in this zone there was one of the very few farmsteads with irrigation, in which a short number of inhabitants lived, not more than 50, that would go increasing after the incorporation of Cartagena to the crown of Castile in the year 1503, so that as a result of the repopulation, at the end of the 16th Century turned El Algar into an authentic population centre.
Now a buzzing town with a variety of residents from a variety of countries and offers all the main services and amenities.
