Regional and Local Area: Sierra Golf Resort is situated in Balsicas, a small village 34km south east of Murcia City and 40km north of Cartagena, both along excellent roads. Balsicas is also linked to both cities by train and services run to many other parts of Spain, including Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia. The region of Murcia enjoys over 300 days of sunshine a year.
Balsicas village offers a supermarket, shops and bar and all other amenities can be found in San Javier just 12km away or the bustling town of Los Alcazares, which lies on the Mar Menor and has many lively beach bars and restaurants.
There is an archaeological deposit in the vicinity and other interesting historic monuments and buildings. Excavations over the last decade have uncovered evidence that dates human existence in the Balsicas area back some 500,000 years. The Sima de las Palomas site along the ridge of El Cabezo Gordo, has also unearthed discoveries from numerous other periods in human history, like a old earthen hearth that is some 40,000 years old.
Despite the range of ancient artefacts, there is little documentation of the town of Balsicas itself until the crude census of 1771. What does exist hints at the Romans using sections of El Cabezo Gordo as an ancient quarry and that the name Balsicas is derived from rafts that were built here in the 16th century.
Activities: paragliding, horseriding, tennis and golf are available in the area. Sandy beaches are just 12km away for swimming or sunbathing and all kinds of water sports such as diving, sailing, surfing etc. For hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, fishing and kayaking head to the Parc Natural de Sierra Espuña. In the winter, you will see its mountain precipices and limestone peaks gleaming white with fresh snow.
The Mar Menor is just 12km east of Balsicas and is a 170-sq-km stunning saltwater lagoon (the largest in Europe) and is a haven for sailing, windsurfing, scuba diving and snorkelling. The water's high salt and iodine concentrations are reputed to have medicinal properties. Sections of the Mar Menor are an important ecological reserve and in September you have the chance to witness the extraordinary migration of flamingos (they rest at the Mar Menor en route to Africa).
Golf: for golfers who fancy a change the stunning 27-hole Mosa Trajectum course is less than 10km away in Sucina, as is Peraleja, a recently opened course designed by Seve Bellasteros, plus two 18-hole golf courses in Polaris World 5 minutes away and Roda Golf, which is a beautifully landscaped 18-hole course designed by Dave Thomas.
Airports: San Javier is approximately a 15 minute drive and Alicante less than hour.
